The elementary program, known as Centre Square Academy, is a uniquely personal and dynamic educational environment. Children are viewed as individuals and programs are designed to meet their needs, according to their level of development. All aspects of the child are considered in forming an individualized educational program.
Each curricular area is broken down into a series of sequential lessons and materials which gradually move children from the concrete realm to abstraction. While Montessori equipment and materials are used initially, the goal of the materials is to assist in building self reliance and self confidence. We embrace the Montessori philosophy of "follow the child", but stress the importance of a curriculum rich in assessment and
accountability.
The math curriculum follows a defined scope and sequence. The student, through the materials and instruction masters skills in numeration, computation and applications. The teacher assists the child's progress from the concrete to the abstract as well as checking for retention. The pace of the program is established by the child with the teacher being the facilitator.
The language arts/reading program effectively integrates both the whole language and phonetic approach based on each child's learning modality. Through this approach, the child develops mastery of all aspects of reading, comprehension, writing, grammar and mechanics, spelling and higher level thinking skills. Each child's reading program is individualized, and structured to meet his or her learning style and level of development.
We do not adhere to chronological ages but rather what the child can achieve. The child is expected to develop an understanding and appreciation for classic literature and writing as it is an integral aspect of the program.
Social Studies and Science are presented as areas of exploration. The foremost goal of the content areas is promoting creative thinking and problem solving. The foundation for the acquisition of complex scientific theory, geographical concepts and cultural awareness provided the basis for the future. All children participate in our annual Science Fair as well as completing research work.
With the new millennium, computer technology is integrated into all areas of the curriculum. Computer instruction is a core subject which is part of the child's daily schedule. The fine arts, physical education, Spanish and music instruction are explored by specialists. The library is used daily.
Centre Square Academy considers itself to be a community of learners who celebrate each day. The faculty is committed and devoted to guiding children to reach their highest potential.
Centre Square Academy embraces the Montessori philosophy of “follow the child”. We apply this philosophy in a unique and special way. Centre Square Academy is an environment that focuses on individualized instruction. We believe a child should
develop and learn at his own pace. Each child has a program that is designed to facilitate this goal. Programs are based on educational ability rather than chronological
age.
Each student begins and ends each day in a classroom where study skills and organizational skills are taught and reinforced. We believe these skills should be taught at the first grade level and strengthened as they move through each grade. Every student at Centre Square Academy receives a white notebook that houses school work and provides a way for parents to monitor the student’s progress.
The students follow a daily schedule that dedicates time for reading, math, social studies, science, foreign language and computer instruction. A teacher that specializes in these areas teaches each subject. Our adjunct faculty includes instruction in
physical education, library, art and music. This structure facilities students learning to transition as well as developing an ability to adjust to different teaching styles. All areas of Centre Square Academy curriculum are integrated.
Centre Square Academy is an environment that celebrates the child and the love of learning. We are a truly joyful place that encourages independence, self-motivation
and success.
